Leadership

I'm writing a blog on leadership but I want you to tell me (and the 6 people who occasionally read/check to see if I've updated this blog) what the word Leadership means to you. What thoughts does it bring up. How would you answer the question what is leadership? (both good and bad Christian and non Christian) I just to do a quick survey on what you think.

Hmmmmm. Good leadership involves making decisions that will result in the best turn-out for everybody involved. This can also include making tough and unpopular decisions if it means a better outcome in the long run. It's leading by a good example. It involves sacrifice.

Leadership is being able to delegate in the firm belief that you have no need to micro manage.

Servanthood+Example+Courage. Knowing who you are and who God is - and knowing the difference.

Leadership is exerting influence in others over a period of time.

Good leadership would mean exerting positive leadership.

Wow there are so many different things that you could talk about here! The first thing that came to mind when I read this was similar to Leah's comment about leading by good example. Something that really concerns me is the number of people (in churches, schools, youth work, whatever) who fail to display the values outlined by their leadership role throughout their personal lives. This sounds really basic but I think it's something that a lot of us don't take seriously enough. If you take on a leadership role it's so important to realise the responsibilities that will come with that. It's not simply about being in a position that allows your voice to be heard.

Five thoughts on leadership (of any sort) (sorry it's taken me so long... meant to do this a while ago).

1. Leadership is nothing without followers.
2. Leadership requires the courage of your convictions.
3. Leadership must in some way serve those being lead - or you'll run out of followers - see point 1.
4. Leadership should be self replicating. There's no point leading anything if there's not someone to take your place if you disappear.
5. Leadership requires a direction - you don't lead by not doing anything. The direction does not have to be right - but people have to be prepared to follow in that direction.

Christian leadership has some extra elements to the above. But you can find those in the Bible.
